"The design iterated in several major ways on Frankenstein" : This makes no sense. Maybe you mean that it improved on Frankenstein? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iteration

Thanks-- this may be a specialist/colloquial term. In programming/game design circles, I've heard people say "iterate on" to mean "improve on in each subsequent version," but I see this is not exactly how the dictionary defines it.

In maths it simply means "put output of function back into function, repeat".
