It was definitely a thing: both Sierra and Infocom did this (the latter under the name "InvisiClues." I looked into it briefly but very short runs of invisible ink printing and custom highlighter pens was not economically doable! ;)

Also, love the secret lens but what about the invisible ink pen!? My brain wants to believe that this was a thing with text adventures.
